dutifully i went to the cafe this morning for my wednesday shift. i brought along 3 jars of sichuan chili oil i made yesterday, as well as the new fridge-mounted stainless steel magnetic knife holder. the streets were covered in white dust, the cold and dry weather depositing all the salt from the snowy cleanup this past weekend.

first thing i did when i arrived was to stick the new knife holder onto the fridge. we already have one, but it's not enough for all the knives we use. the new holder seemed stronger compared to the old one.

my sister wore a mask because she may or may not have covid. my father wore on too, but my mother insisted on being maskless (i didn't wear a mask either).

my mother made some oil rice and i got to sample some, which gave me an excuse to drizzle some sichuan chili oil. it needs to properly mixed before use, so the toasted sesame seeds can mix with the fried chili pepper flakes and the chili oil. it tasted good enough, but like i said yesterday, chili oil is actually not that spicy, it's more about the complex flavors. i could taste a bit of spicy, but also the "numbness" of the sichuan peppercorns. there was the crunch from the fried pepper flakes and sesame seeds, and saltiness from the salt. as for the other ingredients, i couldn't really taste them.

there was that morocco-france world cup game this afternoon. i watched a few minutes of it, after france had already scored a goal. i didn't check the game until it was almost over, saw that france was up 2-0. france ended up winning, which means a france-argentina world cup finals match sunday morning.

my aunt came to pick up her catered meal today, wearing a mask, after 2 weeks homebound due to covid. i gave her a jar of the chili oil, she said matthew had made some in the past but they still hadn't finish that jar yet.

my sister made mapotofu as one of her dishes. i'm kind of a mapotofu snob, after tasting it chengdu, where it was supposedly invented hundreds of years ago. i had some for a late lunch after it stopped being busy. it was really spicy, i'm surprised my sister made it since she has a low spice tolerance.

i left the cafe around 5:30pm. i brought home some fenzhengrou, which i didn't eat for dinner until almost 10pm. i spent the evening dishing up celtics analysis videos on youtube after their victory over the lakers last night.
