woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't fall back asleep. my tenuous hold on subconscious was broken in the morning when the painters working next door started rattling their ladders and hammering their nails. on a saturday? isn't today the second day of rest? i guess people have to make a living. since i'm a friend of the working man, i decided to let it go instead of throwing an unfriendly tantrum. i squeezed out another hour of sleep before finally waking up. i had a can of corn for breakfast while sorting through more photos (it seems like that's all i do these days, almost done though, almost through thailand). i also watched some biography show on the life of halle berry and brooke shields, muy interesante.

julie called me in the afternoon, asking if i wanted to go to the riverfest. figuring i could do with some expensive street food, i said yes. she biked to my place and waited for me while i searched for my bike lock, got the bike out from the basement, and pump up the flat tires. we cut through harvard square on our way to the charles river. i thought the riverfest was held annually in central square but apparently i was wrong (i think the one in central square is the world's fair, something else). a stretch of memorial drive was closed off to cars, pedestrian traffic only. i was surprised to hear my name when we got there, and saw paula and jonathan. we chatted briefly before julie and i headed into the crowd. we parked our bikes and got some food, julie with some indian, while i had an italian sausage and a pepsi ($7). we ate by the river and met up with rahda and david who were nearby sitting underneath a tree. the weather was nice when the sun came out, but the warmth made me worried that we might be in store for another heatwave. together we walked around a bit. i had a mish michaels sighting (my favorite local weather forecaster), who was incognito talking with some folks as we went by. the most interesting thing i think we saw were a group of children drumming on upside-down plastic buckets; they actually sounded pretty good, but the rhythmic drumming seemed to have no end, more of a means to keep their hyperactivity in check.

after the riverfest i followed julie to her community garden in somerville. her onion plants were mutating something awful, spawning offpsrings from their crowns, when normally they should just be flowering. i offered to kill the possessed onions but julie wouldn't consent.

in the evening my family came over to my place to cook some dinner. i basically didn't have anything to do other than to eat, which is something i'm pretty good at. i let them borrow my bootleg copies of constantine and sin city when they left. the rest of the night was spent in quiet solitude as i watched the red sox get shut out by the pirates at home.
