there was nobody online when i woke up this morning, that's how i knew the holiday season was upon us. i spent the whole day watching dvd's. i was surprised when my amazon.com order from late monday night arrived; a bunch of travel books that i thumbed through, the most interesting one being the central asia guide with a chapter on vacationing in afghanistan. it's funny, but early in 2001 i actually had that country on my list of places to visit. in my copious free time i also tried out the new beard trimmer, i never knew there was so much effort in beard maintenance. with my own goatee, i always grew it until it got unmanageable then i shaved it off to start all over again.

in the evening i had dinner at my parents, chinese hot pot once more. i learned that our family christmas dinner was tomorrow, christmas day, instead of the day after, which i thought was the original date. i was hoping that dinner would be one day late so i could cash in on some after-christmas sales for last minute presents. since i got a new dvd player, my parents inherited my old screen house player, and i watched kill bill at their place before leaving. i drove the car back to cambridge and toured somerville a little bit, admiring all the christmas lights displays. when i got home i started making a dozen flan. midway through i realized i didn't have enough sugar. with star market already closed, my only resort was the 24 hours cvs in porter square, where i was able to find some sugar. i narrowly avoided being a christmas statistic when peeling out of my street, i almost ran into a car speeding down the road. my headlights caught the face of an angry old woman cursing me out on christmas eve. happy holidays to you too, ma'am!

for some inexplicable reason i have some serious back pains now. it's either because i slept on it wrong (and the discomfort only now manifesting itself) or maybe it's from lounging on the too-soft couch all day. maybe a nice ylang-ylang aromatherapy bath might soothe my weary bones.
