i woke up in the afternoon today, and then went across the street to get some groceries. i only use the basket, never the cart. anything i can't carry in a shopping basket i probably can't carry it home anyway because i don't have a car. leaving the supermarket, walking across the parking lot, i sneered at all the people with cars. hobbling back home in the rain with armloads of heavy groceries, i kept whispering to myself, "i'm going to have the most powerful arms on the block," from the numerous grocery trips i'll be making. i greased the automatic waffle maker, plugged it in to preheat, and then mixed a batch of belgian waffle mix. the waffles came out sort of flat because i made the mix too watery. i topped them off with some canned strawberries, whip creme, and powdered sugar. this was my brunch. it was already 3pm.

dinner, i made a wild mushroom soup recipe i found on the internet. one of my favorite soups of all time is the wild mushroom soup at au bon pain, and it'd be great if i could recreate that soup. i had common white mushrooms and a few portabello mushrooms, neither of which were the recommended mushrooms to use from the recipe. the mushroom sauté i was cooking smelled pretty good, a very earthy, pungent aroma. when i transferred it into the chicken broth with some milk, that strong flavor was lost in the translation. the final creation was okay, but could've used some corn starch, i found the soup to be too watery. and maybe less chicken broth, i still have 10 servings on the stove, looks like i'm going to be having mushroom soup for the next few days.

i finally ate the flan i made last weekend. unfortunately, it was bitter flan because the homemade molasse that i melted from sugar was burnt. somehow this feels familiar, i think the last time i made molasse from sugar i burnt it as well. making molasse is hard! other than that, it was pretty good.
