i came back to that shady cybercafe i found yesterday off of nanjing donglu, the one that's in a building that may or may not be a brothel. it's kind of smokey, but it's not as crowded as it was yesterday. they scanned a bunch of pages from my passport before they allowed me to surf the web. unfortunately the pc's are lockboxed so i can't get access to the USB port to upload any photos - so photos will have to wait. i went to the shanghai museum this morning. it was interesting, but i browsed through it fairly quickly. nothing really i haven't seen before in other chinese museums. i probably purposely stayed longer than i should because i was reluctant to go back outside to the heat and humidity. i think i forgot what feeling cold feels like because i am in a perpetual state of sweaty. afterwards i went to a xinjiang mutton restaurant, and had a bowl of mutton noodle soup. it was okay and the waitresses thought it was funny that i could speak chinese but just couldn't read it (they give me their english menu). plus soda, the bill came out to RMB$14, less than US$2. did i mention food here is really cheap? later i bought some pants from wolsey, a brand i've never heard of before, but apparently they've been around since 1755. they were having a sale (if i couldn't tell from the large crowd of people), a RMB$290 pair of pants is now RMB$49. after i paid, one of the sales girls led out back into an alley where a seamstress was tailoring articles of clothing. i had my pants altered for free. not sure what i'll do now. i can't believe it's not yet 4pm. at this point i sort of want to go back to the apartment, crank up the AC, and drink enough cold soda until i pass out. there's a convenience store right near where i live; i'm starting to become a regular costumer.
